Whitetail Buck and a bit of Fall Color

This particular young Whitetail Buck came up from behind me. I have my binoculars, I'm looking forward, left and right. Nothing, there is almost always something. Not sure why I turned around but when I did, there he stood. He was quite cooperative. After he stared me down, he walked right past me and continued to the other side of the field. The other photos are of what I sometimes do while waiting or looking for something else.

This Whitetail Buck came in behind me, I have no idea how long he was there before I noticed...

Whitetail Buck, he and I are on to each other...

Wild Turkey... Whitetail Deer... Black Vultures... a Warbler and Sparrows

They had just crossed the railroad tracks and the Wild Turkeys were crossing the road out in front of me. They were in a hurry but I was able to get a few shots before they disappeared. I really got lucky with the Whitetail buck. He showed himself around the six o'clock hour, pm. I was able to take many pics of this guy, he seemed to like being around the does, tis the season you know. I don't think the rut is in yet, but there may be an early doe in heat. He wants to be there when she's ready. Cruising the country roads, a field of hay had been cut and unfortunately for some wild critter; it had received the bad side of the sickle and became vulture food. Here you will see a small gathering gorging. A little bit of trouble identifying the warbler and the sparrows. If my ids are incorrect please let me know.
Why did the Wild Turkeys cross the road?...
Wait for me!!!...
I'll get there when I get there... Sheesh...

I think I see a bug, yep, I see a bug...
Look at me...

Lickin' the stick...

Whitetails and a Praying Mantis...

I turn left out of my driveway and travel less than half a mile and see a nice Whitetail buck. He and I watch each other for a couple of minutes. He allows a few photos before he disappears across a small creek. At another location a doe and her fawn catch my drift. Another group of doe enjoy fresh eats. Then I came across a Praying Mantis. He/she was very cooperative and allowed several photos.

Pileated Woodpecker a Whitetail Buck & Doe and Something a Bit Haunting...

I have been tormented by this Pileated Woodpecker for the longest time. Many times I would be out in the yard and would hear his calls. I'd grab my camera in hopes I would get a photo opportunity but would be evaded by him every time. This time however, I caught him as I turned into my driveway. It's all in the luck of the draw. The Whitetail Buck was spooked as I crept through the woods. Not much time for photos but I was able to snap off a couple. The Whitetail doe... I was lookin' back at her to see if she was lookin' back at me... And she was.  OK... The last photo is veerrrry interesting. I rolled into the battlefield park as I have done many many times throughout the years. Being a place where many civil war soldiers were killed and being the month if Halloween, I believe I captured an image of a civil war spirit. Hmmm... Not so sure, but it's fun to ponder.

Battlefield Whitetail, Wild Turkey and a Marsh Wren...

Worthington house, Constructed ca. 1851, Monocacy National Battlefield

During the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864, Confederate troops crossed the Monocacy River onto the Worthington Farm. From the farm fields, the Confederates initiated three advances toward the Union line positioned at the neighboring Thomas Farm. These actions resulted in heavy casualties and the Worthington House and yard were subsequently used as a field hospital. As the battle raged throughout the day, John Worthington and his family took refuge in the cellar of the house. Although the cellar windows had been boarded up prior to the battle, six-year-old Glenn Worthington was able to observe the action. Impressed with a scene that was forever etched in his memory, Glenn Worthington grew up to write a history of the battle called Fighting for Time. Published in 1932, the book remains an excellent eye-witness account of "the Battle that Saved Washington."
There are many different types of habitats around the park including grass meadows, fence rows and tree lines, deep woods areas, agricultural fields, and river and stream-side forest environments. White-tailed deer are found in abundance on the battlefield; along with wild turkeys and a multitude of other birds and mammals.

Many of my bird and animal photos have been taken in and around the Worthington acreage, including what you see here.
